Brides / Alli Waataja

Diamonds are the most popular engagement and wedding ring stones because they symbolize eternal love—but their dazzling touch isn't just for "I do." Whether you’re celebrating one year or 50 years, diamond jewelry is a go-to gift to honor your ongoing love. In particular, diamond anniversary bands are a meaningful way to add to your wedding stack and celebrate your marriage.

"Traditionally, anniversary bands are given to celebrate milestone anniversaries such as the 10th, 20th, or 25th year of marriage," says Forever Companies CMO Brittany Bozmoksi-Kohnke explains. However, she adds that you don't need to follow tradition—any anniversary can be celebrated with diamonds. No matter how long you’ve been married, a diamond anniversary band is a sparkling symbol of your commitment.

With no shortage of both natural and lab-grown diamond pieces to choose from, selecting something that feels as unique as your love can be overwhelming. If you’re not sure where to start, we’ve got you covered with our top picks for the best diamond anniversary bands online, plus expert insight to make shopping for the investment piece a bit easier.

When shopping for diamonds, you might notice some top retailers —such as Clean Origin and VRAI—carry lab-grown diamonds. As their name suggests, lab-grown diamonds are diamonds grown in a lab as opposed to grown naturally by the Earth and then mined. "Lab-grown diamonds are created in a controlled environment that replicates the natural processes that occur deep in the earth, while mined diamonds are formed over time under extreme pressure and heat beneath the earth's surface," says Bozmoksi-Kohnke. In the case of lab-grown diamonds vs. mined diamonds, she says the only difference is their origin since both are real diamonds with the same physical, chemical, and optical properties.

With that said, lab-grown diamonds can have added value for some, since they require less energy and water to produce and they are created with more sustainable and ethical practices compared to many mining operations. On top of that, lab-grown diamonds typically cost a lot less compared to natural diamonds, which can be a reason in and of itself to purchase lab-grown. If you wish to purchase a natural diamond but are concerned about sustainability, it helps to do a little bit of research on a retailer's website or the product page as most sustainable retailers will highlight their practices regardless of whether their diamonds are created in a lab or by the Earth.

The shape of a diamond can significantly impact the overall style, so it's important to look at this, too. While this tends to be more noticeable in a single-stone ring (like an engagement ring), some bands can be completely transformed by the diamond shape, especially if it's unexpected like a baguette or marquise. If you’re looking for a more classic diamond anniversary band, the go-to shape is round. However, you can find them in a variety of shapes, including oval, baguette, marquise, and emerald.

When choosing a diamond shape, think about what your partner already has—and if it's time to change things up. "This is an opportunity to experiment with different diamond shapes," says jewelry designer Jean Dousset. While there's nothing wrong with matching, mixing it up can add a fun, personalized touch to your stack.

Metal type also determines style, so this is something to keep top of mind when shopping, too. If the ring will be worn with a wedding stack, it helps to look for diamond anniversary bands in the same metal type. However, some might prefer a mixed metals look—for example, white gold can be paired yellow gold for a more modern, unexpected feel.

Most retailers and designers carry diamond anniversary bands in yellow gold, white gold, and rose gold; some also include platinum. Some retailers only offer rings in one or two metal types, so being mindful of this feature can help you narrow down your search results when shopping.

The scale and fit of a diamond anniversary band are another thing you’ll want to consider when shopping, especially if you plan to wear the ring with your wedding stack. "It's important to determine which size band works well with the existing engagement ring, without overpowering it," Dousset adds.

Diamond shape and metal type both play a role in the overall style of the ring. However, you can up the ante with some additional design choices. "If your bridal jewelry is classic, this could be an opportunity to choose a bolder look by adding color— sapphires or black diamonds, for example—or by selecting a different metal," says jewelry designer Jillian Sassone.

Sassone also recommends considering the overall functionality of your rings, as a diamond anniversary band could be a way to change it up and choose something that feels more every day. "If you have a flashy bridal set, you might seek something more understated in an anniversary band that can be used for travel or the gym ," she explains.

According to jewelry designer Alexis Taub, diamond anniversary bands are traditionally worn on the fourth left finger (aka your ring finger). With that being said, Sassone says there are no hard and fast rules and you can wear it on your right hand, or stack it with other rings and swap it in and out for your original wedding stack.

Wearing your anniversary band on a different finger and on its own may also better for the longevity of your ring, too. "While it is very popular to stack your engagement ring and wedding band on your ring finger, I always recommend wearing them separately because the collision against each other constantly can loosen the setting and damage the stones," says Taub.

If you follow marriage gifting traditions, the 10th wedding anniversary is historically considered the "diamond anniversary," which is when some choose to give diamond anniversary bands (although other diamond pieces are also popular). With that said, Dousset says there are no set rules on when to get an anniversary band and they are also connected to other relationship milestones.

"Historically, anniversary gifts like a new band have a tendency to follow big milestones and also the professional and financial path of couples’ lives," Dousset explains. With that said, he believes that the affordability of lab-grown diamonds has really disrupted this tradition and notes that some brides even opt for a third band at the time of their wedding rather than an anniversary. "Other couples will buy a third band after the birth of their first child, a trend that's becoming increasingly popular," Dousset adds.

Since jewelry is so personal, Sassone says the "old adage around what you should spend should be shown the door." She explains that, whether you spend $500 or $5,000, the design, style, and sentiment is what makes the ring so special, not how much it costs. At the end of the day, the amount of money you spend on an anniversary ring "depends on your personal budget and the style you’re after," says Bozmoksi-Kohnke. "The cost can vary depending on factors such as stone type [including whether or not it's lab-grown], size, quality, style, and metal type," she explains.
